XVI International Conference on Science, Arts and Culture

In honour of Paolo Budinich

Veli Lošinj, Croatia, 29th August - 2ndSeptember 2016

SESAME (the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Application in the Middle East), a third generation synchrotron light source, is under construction in Allan, Jordan. In line with the ideals which led to the creation of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, namely promoting basic science in the developing countries, the establishment of an international laboratory based on a synchrotron light source in the Middle East was proposed by Abdus Salam already in the 90's and well supported by the international community. Now SESAME is a reality and is about to start operating.

Several institutions in Trieste (ELETTRA, ICTP, Trieste Section of INFN) contribute to different aspects of the project, which is also vigorously supported by INFN and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affair. To assess the status of SESAME and its integration in the network of similar facilities an international conference is organized, which is open to all interested persons. The goal of the conference is to provide a forum where the requirements and the expectations of SESAME and of the other new projects ongoing in developing countries (Iran, Pakistan,...) are spelled out and compared to the corresponding realizations and availabilities of the existing machines in the industrialized countries (ELETTRA, ESRF, RAL, PSI,...).

The conference is dedicated to the late Paolo Budinich, who played a major role in the establishment of ICTP in Trieste and in the subsequent creation of the many international institutions which make up the so called "Trieste system". For this reason the conference venue is Veli Lošinj, the town where Budinich was born 100 years ago, on a Croatian island about 100 km south of Trieste. Transportation will be provided by the workshop organization from Trieste to Lošinj on Sunday, 28th August and from Lošinj to Trieste on Saturday, 3rd September.

The conference is jointly organized by ECSAC (the European Center for Science, Art and Culture), by the Physics Consortium in Trieste and by the FIT (Trieste International Foundation), and largely supported by Italian and Croatian Institutions, and by the International Institutions in Trieste.
